About

Our History

Heartwood Caskets is a Jackson, Michigan based husband and wife venture to build beautiful, simple caskets.

We bought a hobby sawmill in 2020 with our stimulus package and have been upskilling our woodworking capabilities ever since.

In May 2024, Peter was laid off of a tech job, so we decided to turn our side shuffle into a full time job focused on making practical caskets with an eye towards sustainability.

Materials

All of our wood comes from Michigan. The hardwood is what would be classed as urban lumber. It comes from our own yard, friend's yards, FaceBook Marketplace after storms or from local land that has been cleared of trees.

We buy our pine from a woman owned and operated saw mill in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and haul it back ourselves.
