It's not something most people have considered, but why not? We are practical people here at Heartwood Caskets and we think this is about as pragmatic as you can get. Save your friends and family the burden of picking out a casket for you by purchasing your casket ahead of time and enjoy having it as a beautiful part of your home for years to come.
Casket Bookcases
How They Are Made
Traditional joinery, pegs and rawhide glue are what make our caskets strong. We don't use plywood, metal fixtures, synthetic finishes or glues. These caskets would be acceptable for green burial.
All of our caskets have a bookcase add-on so you can use it in your home as a bookcase until a casket is needed. No assembly required. It takes less than 3 minutes to convert from a bookcase to a casket.
As a husband and wife team, we turn hardwood logs into finished furniture in our small, home based shop.

Pinus resinosa
Simple Pine
Built with knotty pine from Michigan's upper peninsula, our pine casket is simple but well built. We offer three handle options. It can be used as bookcase or a storage bench until you need it as a casket.

Cherry
The cherry caskets are our favorites! The wood is neither too light nor too dark and adds a nice warmth to the room. When freshly worked it is lighter, but gradually darkens with age.

Black Walnut
As a premium domestic wood, black walnut is eye catching. It has beautiful grain and takes a nice finish. As a casket or bookcase it is dignified without needing fancy moulding and glossy lacquer.
