Black Walnut Casket

Black walnut is prized for its dark chocolate color and beautiful grain. We have had a commercial saw mill representative knock on our door asking if we would like to sell our trees. "We have a sawmill" was all it took for this rep to realize we knew what we had.

Our hardwood caskets are made from logs milled on our property. This type of casket has three handhold cutouts on each of the long sides and one on each end, allowing for up to 8 pallbearers. They are held together with traditional joinery, wood pegs and hide glue. We don't use any metal fasteners or synthetic finishes. The wood is finished with our homemade linseed, tung oil, beeswax and citrus oil finish.

This casket turns into a classy bookcase. The arched top of the casket along with the optional shelves and pedestal make the casket into a bonafide bookcase when up on its end. The lid fits on the back and covers the handholds, so you don't need to figure out where to put that. We have put a lot of thought into this!
