Cherry is one of our favorite woods. It is easy to work, smells nice and has a beautiful warm tone that is close to salmon when freshly cut and gradually darkens to a deep red. It is also very plentiful in this part of Michigan and can be found in yards, forest and hedgerows.
Initially, Amanda's mom said she would be happy with our simple pine casket... that was until she saw a cherry one.
All our hardwood caskets are made from logs milled on our own property. The casket has three hand hold cutouts on each of the long sides and one on each end, allowing for up to 8 pallbearers. They are held together with traditional joinery, wood pegs and hide glue. We don't use any plywood, metal fixtures or synthetic finishes. The wood is finished with our homemade linseed, tung oil, beeswax and citrus oil finish.
This casket turns into a classy bookcase. The arched top of the casket along with the optional shelves and pedestal make the casket into a bonafide bookcase when up on its end. The lid fits on the back and covers the handholds, so you don't need to figure out where to store it. We have put a lot of thought into this!
